What is Ben Stiller doing standing alone in a barren landscape, with a skateboard and knapsack in hand? Nothing really, but because we’re looking at him in the first official still from the upcoming film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” we have reason to overanalyze and speculate what little details the photo reveals.
In contrast with the set photos that surfaced online last year, which showed Stiller and co-star Kristen Wiig looking decades older than their real ages, this production still shows Stiller at or around his real age and comes to us from the L.A. Times with no other information. What we do know about the film is that it is a remake the 1947 film of the same name which starred Boris Karloff and Danny Kaye. Stiller’s 2013 version, in which he stars and also directs, revolves around the same story as the original which is based on a short story by James Thurber.
Stiller plays the titular Mitty, an otherwise ordinary man who works as a photo editor at a magazine and spends most of his time daydreaming about a much more adventurous life. Mitty’s life takes an interesting turn when he becomes involved in a real-life adventure about which he had only previously dreamed. “Mitty” also boasts an impressive cast that also includes Shirley MacLaine, Patton Oswalt, Adam Scott and Kathryn Hahn.
So back to this new photo, is this Stiller-as-Mitty in the midst of one of his daydreams, possibly fantasizing about exploring and skateboarding? Or is this a shot of Mitty in his real life, possibly trying to make one of his daydreams a reality? We likely won’t find out until closer to or on the film’s release date on December 25.
