Jennifer Lawrence and filmmaker David O. Russell are looking to make lightning strike twice.
Their first collaboration, "Silver Linings Playbook" proved to be both a box office hit and an awards season darling. The movie is up for eight Academy Awards this Sunday, including a likely Best Actress trophy for Lawrence and directing and screenwriting nominations for Russell. So it's not terribly surprising that Lawrence has signed on to Russell's next project "The Ends of the Earth."
Producers Todd Black, Steve Tisch and Jason Blumenthal released a statement, which read in part, "Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most versatile actresses we have ever seen. Her performance in 'Silver Linings' was transcendent and was truly the heart and soul of the film. Jennifer was basically asked to play 4 personalities -- depressed, sexy, romantic and a wild dancer -- and did them all brilliantly. After seeing that performance we knew we had our anchor for 'The Ends of the Earth.'"
Russell also heaped praise on his leading lady, saying, "She is the most dedicated person I know. She is devoted to her family and they have been the true inspiration for her character and integrity. Her acting is effortless and she always makes it look easy."
Inspired by a true story, "The Ends Of The Earth" concerns a top-level oil company executive who puts his career and his personal life in jeopardy when he falls into an extra-marital affair. The screenplay was written by Chris Terrio, who like Russell and Lawrence is an Oscar nominee this year, cited for his script for "Argo."
Word also has it that "The Ends of the Earth" won't be the last collaboration between Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell -- she's reported to have been cast in a small role in Russell's upcoming project about the ABSCAM political corruption scandal.
