Biopic Misfires: From Bill Murray's FDR Movie to Naomi Watts's Princess Diana Drama

'The Imitation Game,' which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as World War II mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing, hits theaters on Friday. Biopics such as this are often Oscar magnets, especially in the lead acting categories: 12 of the last 20 winners took home a trophy for playing real people. Ever since 'The Imitation Game' premiered at Telluride, many have suggested that Cumberbatch could manage a nomination. But for every biopic that helps an actor go on to an Oscar nod or win, there are two more with similar hopes that went on to be dashed. (Indeed, Cumberbatch starred in his own biopic bust last year, 'The Fifth Estate.') We’ve picked out 18 performances from the latter category: some were good, some were bad, but none proved as successful as their creators had hoped. Click through to see our selection.
