Best Picture Fail Is One of Many Memorable Moments From the Oscars

The Best Picture mistake heard round the world was just one of many memorable moments from the 89th Academy Awards. In one of the most shocking moments in the history of the Oscars, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner. It’s easy to see now that there was a problem as Beatty fumbled with the envelope and delayed the announcement, but at the time, everyone assumed he was just joking around. After a few acceptance speeches from La La Land producers and an abrupt announcement by one of them that there had been a mistake, Beatty returned to the microphone to explain that it was no joke. Beatty said, “I opened the envelope, and it said Emma Stone, La La land. That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

While the night ended on a crazy note, the show opened with many wonderful notes from Justin Timberlake as he performed “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and transitioned into the 1977 Bill Withers hit, “Lovely Day.” Jimmy Kimmel joked that if other members of NSync saw the performance, they might let Justin back in the group.

Kimmel was a great host throughout the night, cracking political jokes, parachuting in snacks, and, of course, mocking celebs. Kimmel even gave the incomparable Meryl Streep a hard time, joking that she had “phoned it in for over 50 films,” and then demanded a standing ovation for the “highly overrated” Streep.

Even though political humor was consistent throughout the night, there were some serious political statements made as well. Presenter Gael García Bernal spoke about the border wall; Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, didn’t show up in protest of President Trump’s travel ban; and the filmmakers behind The White Helmets asked everyone during their acceptance speech to remember the civil war in Syria.

But the night was really about people being recognized for making films, and there were some big winners. Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar; Kevin O’Connell, who held the record for most nominations without a win, finally took home an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing for Hacksaw Ridge; and Viola Davis had everybody in tears when she won Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

One of the most fun and entertaining moments of the night came when Jimmy pranked a bunch of unsuspecting tourists by making them think they were just going to see an exhibit of Oscars fashion. But they really walked into the Academy Awards and had a front row view of the front row. Jimmy even got the A-list celebs to give them some stuff, like Jennifer Aniston, who gave someone her sunglasses.
