BERLIN - A Company, the Berlin-based production, distribution and rights group, will launch a new distribution outfit in Vietnam. A Company Vietnam will kick off operations with the local release of Cloud Atlas, which A Company co-produced, on Feb. 21.
Cloud Atlas was also the first release of A Company's new Russian distribution arm last year. The fantasy epic grossed more than $16 million in Russia, giving the film blockbuster status in the territory.
A Company Vietnam has been set up as a joint venture between A Company Filmed Entertainment and Nhiem van Nguyen, the former General Director of Vietnamese Coloa film studio. The new group will operate as an independent distribution company, handling both theatrical and TV rights.
“After the tremendously successful start of A Company Russia, it was only logical for us to go ahead with the plan of strategic expansion of our company to more emerging entertainment markets around the world," said Alexander Rodnyansky, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of A Company Filmed Entertainment. “We believe that Vietnam in the very near future will become one of the driving forces of the world box-office and by establishing A Company Vietnam, we want to get ahead of the curve."
Following Cloud Atlas, A Company Vietnam's 2013 slate will include Stuart Beattie's fantasy adventure I, Frankenstein starring Aaron Eckhart and the action-thriller The Coup with Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan.
Theatrical admissions in Vietnam hit 13.5 million in 2011, the last year for which figures are available, and are forecast to more than double to 30 million within the next five years.
“We are entering the Vietnamese market at the right time, as it’s still rapidly expanding but not yet oversaturated," said Nhiem van Nguyen. "The people here love cinema, but in addition to the commercial blockbusters, there is a need for quality-driven and independent productions, which we will bring to the audience with the support and long-term experience of A Company Berlin."
