Benedict Cumberbatch Says Doctor Strange Will Be Arrogant, But Funny
Early trailers for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange have suggested that Stephen Strange will need to learn that there’s more to the world than he knows — but Benedict Cumberbatch, the man that is bringing the comic book Sorcerer Supreme to life, promises that he won’t become too humble in the process.
What drew him to the project, he told Empire, was “the script, the director, Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president], and talking about how to make a character written in the ‘60s and ‘70s relevant now.” The way to do that, he explained, was “to make him slightly less arrogant. Arrogant, but also humorous.”
If that description sounds familiar, it probably should. After all, it’s being arrogant but also humorous that has made Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. With Downey’s future with the franchise uncertain beyond 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, could Cumberbatch’s Strange be positioned to take his place?
Elsewhere in the same interview, Cumberbatch also said that seeing footage of the movie at San Diego Comic-Con this year made him fully appreciate what he was involved in for the first time. “Some bits made me think, ‘Wow. God. That’s what I’m part of,’ ” he said. “You have conceptual art that they show you, but you only really realize what you’re part of at the end of the process.”
Doctor Strange casts his spell in theaters starting Nov. 4.
