‘Batman v Superman’ Remains Atop Disc Sales Chart

Warner’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” remained at No. 1 on both national home video sales charts for the week ended July 31, with five newcomers landing in the top 10.

Universal Pictures’ “The Boss,” a comedy with Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Bell that earned $63 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 2 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD unit sales, as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart.

Lionsgate’s “Criminal,” a crime actioner with Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones that earned a meager $14.7 million at the domestic box office, bowed at No. 3, also on both charts.

A third new release, Warner’s “Barbershop: The Next Cut,” debuted at No. 5 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 7 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The Ice Cube-starring sequel to 2002’s “Barbershop” (and 2004’s “Barbershop 2: Back in Business”) earned $54 million in theaters, nearly a third less than the original.

Universal Pictures’ “Hardcore Henry” debuted at No. 8 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The film, a sci-fi adventure with $9.3 million in theatrical revenues, tells the story of a man brought back from the dead by his wife, and is presented from his first-person perspective as he fights to rescue her from a powerful warlord with plans to build a bio-engineered army.

And Lionsgate’s “I Am Wrath,” a crime drama with John Travolta filmed more than a year ago, bowed at No. 10 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 15 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.

Lionsgate’s “The Divergent Series: Allegiant,” the third in the franchise based on a series of young-adult sci-fi books, slipped to No. 4 from No. 2 the prior week.

Among the five newcomers, “Hardcore Henry” generated the highest percentage of total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc (58%), followed by “The Boss” (44%), “Criminal” (41%), “Barbershop: The Next Cut” (30%) and “I Am Wrath” (25%).

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Criminal” debuted at No. 1, pushing the previous week’s top rental, Universal Pictures’ “London Has Fallen,” to No. 2. “Miracles From Heaven,” from Sony Pictures, rebounded a notch to No. 3, while the 20th Century Fox/DreamWorks hit “Kung Fu Panda 3” likewise popped back up to No. 4 (from No. 5 the prior week).

Rounding out the top five on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart was “Allegiant,” down from No. 2 the previous week.

“I Am Wrath” debuted at No. 8.
