'Bad Moms' Trailer: Out of the Carpool Lane, Into the Rager

The new trailer for Bad Moms should completely obliterate all the lingering aftertaste left behind by Garry Marshall’s Mother’s Day.

Co-directed and co-written by Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the movie takes aim at the overwhelming “having it all” expectations placed on today’s working moms. The trailer (watch above) zeroes in on Mila Kunis’s character, who becomes so overwhelmed by the daily struggle to take care of the kids, make it to marketing meetings on time, get the dog to the vet, and contribute gluten-free desserts to the PTA bake sale that she finally reaches a breaking point.

Instead of trying to be the perfect mom, she’s going to be the bad mom. You know, the kind of mother you read about in those nostalgic Facebook posts about how negligent parents were permitted to be in the ’70s and ’80s.

Kunis is joined in her badness by Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, who advice her about her bra choices in a scene that feels awfully reminiscent of a similar moment, also involving Bell, in The Boss. It’s hard to tell from this preview whether the movie will spend more of its time skewering societal expectations of women or just enabling Kunis and Co. to get wasted and behave like female versions of the dudes in Old School. Here’s hoping it’s the former, because Tina Fey and Amy Poehler pretty recently gave us a taste of the latter in Sisters. But a smart and funny critique of contemporary motherhood? That would be a welcome addition to the summer movie landscape. Bad Moms hits theaters on July 29.
