'Avengers 2' Costume Tweaks: Thor Loses the Sleeves and Captain America Just Wants to Pee

The superhero costume is a perennial work in progress in a series like Marvel’s The Avengers. “They always do little tweaks,” said Chris Evans when asked about the costume upgrades he and his crime-fighting castmates received for their latest go-at-it, Avengers: Age of Ultron (you can watch our chat with the stars above).

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow suit got the most dramatic alteration. “I went electric,” said Johansson, who reprises the role of Black Widow (her fourth time as the Russian heroine) in reference to the Tron-esque new suit (courtesy of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark) that allows her to fire electrical blasts of energy at the bad guys. It didn’t make for the most comfortable work on set: “I had a giant battery pack that I dragged around everywhere,” added the actress, who was pregnant during the movie’s filming (she delivered a baby girl last September).

“[I] lost the sleeves,” said Chris Hemsworth, who plays the jacked Asgardian Thor for a fourth time in Ultron. “It was too hot. There’s maybe one scene where we pay homage to [the classic look]. But [the sleeves] were ridiculously hot and uncomfortable.” We’re guessing the many admirers of Hemsworth, who was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in November, don’t mind the extended preview of his guns.

Asked if he’s envious he doesn’t get to wear a fancy get-up given his superhero, Hulk, is a CGI-creation, Mark Ruffalo said that he was… at first. “But now I look at them and they have to carry little portable air conditioners with them everywhere they go,” he said. “And I’m like, 'I’m kinda stoked I don’t have to wear a costume. But no, I want a superhero suit, though.” (Heat is a common thing when talking to the Avengers cast about their suits; Paul Bettany logged a similar complaint about his brand new Vision costume.)

The actors said they’re all allowed input on what tweaks go into their armor. “Just whatever makes things easier — like [being able] to pee easier,” said Evans, who’s now played Captain America four times (not counting a cameo in Thor: The Dark World), and who will soon begin production on his fifth, Captain America: Civil War. “Whatever [makes] it easy to get them off or on. And obviously, there are certain parts that pinch or scratch, and in a fight sequence you want it to be accommodating. But, really — just being able to pee.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1.
