Watch R2-D2 Fall in Love With a Mailbox

He’s brave, loyal and endlessly entertaining, all the qualities one looks for in a romantic partner. So why shouldn’t R2-D2 find love?

Sure, he’s a droid, but as WALL-E proved, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a heart. And in the new short film above, Artoo in Love by writer-director Evan Atherton, the little guy finally finds a soulmate. Unfortunately, that soulmate is an inanimate object.

In a strange dystopian world where humans have seemingly disappeared, but the architecture and the natural environment remain intact, R2-D2 travels along the streets of San Francisco and Berkeley, CA, going about his business… until he comes across a rather pretty blue mailbox, which immediately catches his sensors.

The R2-D2 unit featured in the film was made by a model-maker named Grant McKinney, who began the process of constructing the droid all the way back in 2009. He’s no rogue droid-builder, either; in fact, there is actually a whole society of crafty nerds who build their own R2-D2 units, aptly called the R2-D2 Builders Club. The group has been around since 1999, and has since begun building all sorts of other robots that populate the Star Wars universe.
