Anne Hathaway Has Some Oscar Hosting Advice For Neil Patrick Harris

Franco and Hathaway at the 2011 Oscars

Never let it be said that Anne Hathaway doesn’t learn from her mistakes. The actress gained notoriety for her painfully awkward performance at the Academy Awards in 2011, which she co-hosted with a near-comatose James Franco. Four years later, she’s urging this year’s Oscar host, Neil Patrick Harris, to try a different tactic. When asked if she had any advice for Harris, Hathaway told the New York Times: “Do the opposite of what I did, and you’ll be fine.” Can’t argue with that! Hathaway did bounce back nicely from her embarrassment: She returned to the stage in 2013 to accept the best supporting actress Oscar for Les Misérables, created a killer Catwoman for The Dark Knight Rises, and has taken on a producer role for her new musical romance Song One. Here, from the Times interview, is more of Hathaway’s advice for living.

On what you can learn from your haters:Self-acceptance. If you’re not someone who has a natural and effortless love for yourself, it’s hard to let go of your desire to please other people, and that’s really not an ingredient for a happy life.”

On vaping: “I don’t judge the vape. I know some people who used to be three-pack-a-day smokers, and I’d much prefer them having the vape.”

On living in Los Angeles:Buy stock in Coppertone.”
