Anna Kendrick's 'Squirrel Girl' Bid Gets a Boost from Edgar Wright

Director Edgar Wright knows his way around fun comic-book adaptations — see 2010’s sterling videogame-inspired Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. And while his foray into Marvel moviemaking didn’t pan out — he was the original writer/director of Ant-Man, but eventually exited the project, which was then inherited by Bring it On’s Peyton Reed — when the Shaun of the Dead auteur chimes in on all things Marvel, it’ll get our attention.

In a tweet yesterday, Wright rattled off the various big-screen superheroes played by actors in Scott Pilgrim, from Brandon Routh in Superman Returns to Chris Evans in both Fantastic Four and Captain America. And at the conclusion of that impressive list, he let it be known that he thinks Anna Kendrick should take the reins of an adaptation of Marvel’s Squirrel Girl.

Wright’s comment comes on the heels of Kendrick voicing her own interest in a future film about Squirrel Girl (watch the clip above). The role would seem like a natural fit for the vivacious actress, given that the character is herself akin to a charismatic superhero-loving fan who acquires extraordinary healing, speed, and strength-related powers.

Of course, Marvel has yet to say whether they even have the slightest interest in bringing Squirrel Girl to the screen, but a possible film starring the character sounds to us like an ideal way to get both Wright and Kendrick — two of Hollywood’s most uniquely entertaining talents — into the Marvel fold.
