First Trailer for Acclaimed Amy Winehouse Doc 'Amy' Teases Talent and Tragedy

Last week, the new Amy Winehouse documentary Amy wowed audiences at the Cannes Film Festival. And today, the first full trailer for director’s Asif Kapadia’s new deep-dive documentary about late superstar has been released online.

Though the new trailer — which you can watch above — opens with early home video of the young songstress showing off her otherworldly voice, and then giggling along with her family and friends, the trailer takes a necessarily somber tone almost from the get-go, given the tragic story that it teases: Winehouse, whose prodigious talent was eclipsed only by her fear of fame and susceptibility to bad influences, died of an alcohol overdose at the age of 27, just a few short years after taking the world by storm with her Grammy-winning album Back to Black.

Having lived and died in the era of TMZ, the basic facts of Winehouse’s story have already been broadcast across the world. But Kapadia’s documentary digs deep into her rise and fall, giving fans new angles with which to view the songstress’ Icarus-like career.

As Yahoo Movies reported from Cannes, the film offers “More archival footage and more previously unseen photographs and more interviews with the people who knew her,“ including some of her best childhood friends and early industry allies.

Winehouse’s family and management at first cooperated with the film, but later pulled out, accusing it of making “unfounded and unbalanced” allegations. Viewers can make up their own minds when Amy hits theaters on July 3rd.
