'American Idol' Alum Crystal Bowersox to Play Patsy Cline on Broadway

Crystal Bowersox, the "American Idol" Season 9 runner-up, will take on Patsy Cline in the Broadway premiere of a new musical based on the country legend's life.

Annette O'Toole, of "Smallville" and "Superman III" fame, will co-star in Ted Swindley's "Always… Patsy Cline." The musical will being previews in July and will officially open in August, producers said. It will feature 30 songs from the "Sweet Dreams" songstress.

Bowersox is best known as a runner-up on Season 9 of "American Idol.' Although a favorite of judge Simon Cowell, Bowersox fell short of the big prize, losing to Lee DeWyze. Bowersox's debut album "Farmer's Daughter"sold over 200,000 albums and her follow-up "All That For This," this week.

O'Toole will play Cline's devoted fan, Louise Seger.

The play will be directed by Tony Award winner John Rando ("Urinetown: The Musical") and the scenery will be designed by Anna Louizos ("Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella").

The timing of the show coincides with the 50th anniversary of Cline's death this year.
