'American Gigolo' TV Series in Development at Showtime

A TV remake of American Gigolo is in development at Showtime, Variety has confirmed.

The series, based on the 1980 Richard Gere film, will be set in present day Los Angeles.

Showtime’s American Gigolo hails from Paramount TV and Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Playwright Neil LaBute is attached to write the show. Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman will serve as executive producers. KristieAnne Reed will serve as co-executive producer, and James Oh as a producer. Paul Schrader, who wrote and directed the original film, is on board as an executive consultant.

Paramount TV and Bruckheimer have been working on this American Gigolo series for about two years, exploring the project, before it landed at a network.

For Paramount TV, American Gigolo is the latest series for the company, joining Amazon’s Jack Ryan, Netflix’s Thirteen Reasons Why, Jonah Hill and Emma Stone’s Maniac at Netflix, USA Network’s Shooter, Epix’s Berlin Station, and more.

For Jerry Bruckheimer TV, the project — which was first reported by Deadline — is the second TV reboot based on a movie to go into development this season, following Enemy of the State, which is in the works at ABC.
