'Jupiter Ascending' Trailer Looks Like a Worthy Return for the Wachowskis

Ah … we knew that eventually there would be a movie worthy of the distinction ‘From the Creators of The Matrix Trilogy.’

Yes, we might be overly excited (and overly optimistic) about a teaser trailer that presents more questions than it does answers, but the first look at “Jupiter Ascending" makes us remember a world in which the Wachowskis were the number-one authority on kick-ass science fiction … and no one questioned their reign.

The teaser at least hints at the plot of next summer’s hush-hush extravaganza, as one character tells Mila Kunis, who seems to be playing some variation on The One, that “Your Earth is a small part of a very large industry,” and ever-grizzled Sean Bean tells Channing Tatum (with heavy eye makeup and pointy ears) that he’s “the perfect hunting machine” and that he’s “been searching for one thing your whole life … and she’s down there.”

But whatever. Most of the trailer is dedicated to the kind of eye-popping Wachowski-ish sci-fi spectacle that we’ve been waiting for since … well, since “The Matrix Revolutions” back in 2003. We got a taste of their anime-inspiredaesthetic in at least one segment of last year’s vastly underrated “Cloud Atlas,” but “Jupiter Ascending” looks like it could be the heir apparent to “The Matrix” that we’ve long been waiting for.

That’s right — no candy-colored, hyperactive cartoony CG mayhem a la 2008’s “Speed Racer” here (though, to be fair, that was pretty fun in its own right). This is dark, epic, action-packed science fiction — one that stars Magic Mike, Ned Stark and Mark Wahlberg’s girlfriend from “Ted,” at that.

We’re sure that the “official trailer” will reveal more of the film’s actual story. For now, bask in some of the sweetest eye candy this side of … well, Jupiter.

Jupiter Ascending" will hit theaters on July 25, 2014.
