A Primer on This Weekend's Ferris Fest, a Celebration of All Things Bueller

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t celebrate the 30th anniversaries of movies you loved in the ‘80s, you could miss them.

Actually, the 30th anniversary of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off doesn’t land on the calendar until next month. But the organizers of Ferris Fest are getting a head start on things with this weekend’s three-day-long celebration of all things related to Ferraris and Abe Froman.

The event, taking place in the Chicago area, kicks off Friday night with the “Shermer High School 1986 Spring Dance,” which is technically not being held at Shermer High School — which isn’t real — but at the Athletico Center. Sirius XM’s Richard Blade will DJ and several actors from the movie — Edie McClurg (Grace), Cindy Pickett (Katie Bueller), Lyman Ward (Tom Bueller), Jonathan Schmock (the snotty host at Chez Qui), and Larry “Flash” Jenkins, one of the two dudes who takes Cameron’s father’s Ferrari for a joy ride — will all be in attendance.

Other activities planned this weekend:

-A re-creation of Ferris Bueller’s room, on display Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Virgin Hotels.

-Screenings of the movie on Saturday and Sunday evenings, featuring Q&As with the aforementioned cast members both nights. Saturday’s screening will be moderated by film critic Richard Roeper.

-A two-part bus tour of locations featured in the movie; the first part, which includes Cameron’s house and the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower happens on Saturday. Sunday’s tour includes Wrigley Field and the Art Institute of Chicago.

-A re-creation of the famous parade scene on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the end of the second bus tour. The location of the event will be revealed by email to ticket holders only. Lee Ann Marie, one of the fräuleins who dances on the float with Ferris, has “reinvented the choreography” from the movie especially for the event, according to the organizers.

Full event passes have long been sold out, but scattered individual event tickets can still be purchased here. And here’s the full schedule of events, should you decide to jump in your car and drive to Chicago this weekend. You know, as opposed to just doing this.
