Just as crime movies are a regular part of our film diet, so too have portrayals of organized crime become a staple of that genre. Traditions, loyalty, violence, betrayal, forbidden love: gangster films provide the perfect backdrop for every Shakespearean theme latent in society.
The latest such offering is By the Gun, the trailer for which you can see above, exclusively on Yahoo Movies.It’s a thriller about young street punk named Nick (played by Ben Barnes), who lives in awe of the mob heavyweights ruling his local Boston streets. Like many a film criminal prodigy before him, Nick ingratiates himself into the mob hierarchy, demonstrating a misguided work ethic and a talent for ruthless violence. Having found favor with his bosses, he falls in love with a local bartender (Leighton Meester), who makes him consider the downsides to a life built on ruthless violence.
As with so many mob films, it is the character actors who get to shine in bigger-than-life roles as the men who live by a code. By the Gun features a first rate line-up of acting veterans, including the great Harvey Keitel and Toby Jones.
By the Gun opens December 5th.
