Happy 50th Anniversary 'The Sound of Music!' Celebrate With 7 Funny Spoofs

Fifty years ago today, movie audiences heard Julie Andrews sing about raindrops on roses and lonely goatherds for the very first time. The Sound of Music, the 1965 musical about an ex-nun who becomes the governess to seven children, is celebrating its golden anniversary — and what better way to celebrate than with satire? Here, in GIF and video form, are 7 awesome Sound of Music spoofs (including one from Andrews herself).

The Simpsons (1994)
Thirteen years later, The Simpsons would base an entire episode, “Yokel Chords,” on The Sound of Music — but it couldn’t top this classic four-second gag from “Bart Gets An Elephant.”

Saturday Night Live (2013)
Inspired by NBC’s Sound of Music Live! broadcast, SNL presented this “condensed” version starring an Kate McKinnon’s uncanny Maria and a brand new Von Trapp sibling: the Kristen Wiig character Dooneese.

Mad TV (2006)
Things get very, very dark in the Sound of Music “alternative endings” unearthed by MadTV, one of which features a pro-Nazi version of “My Favorite Things.” On the other hand, the line “Liesl, use your laser eyes!” really elevates the whole film.

Sesame Street (1988)
In this episode of Monsterpiece Theater, Grover heads to the Alps to hear that elusive sound of music.

“Singing nuns are one thing, Robin. But trust me: You want to leave before the marionettes.” (via Batman Running Award From S—-)

Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall (1962)
One of the first people to spoof The Sound of Music on television was Julie Andrews herself, playing an unbearably chipper Maria in this 1962 special co-starring Carol Burnett. Yes, 1962, meaning the film hadn’t even been made yet — but the Broadway show (starring Mary Martin as Maria Von Trapp) had been running for three years. Did Andrews have any idea she was satirizing the character who would one day define her career?

And as a bonus, neither a gif nor a video, but the only Return of the Jedi/Sound of Music mashup you’ll ever need (T-shirts on sale here!)
