5 Things You See In Every ‘Mission: Impossible’ Film

As you sit down to watch Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (opening July 31), you may find yourself experiencing déjà vu. That’s because, from 1996’s Mission: Impossible onward, every installment of the Tom Cruise spy franchise has had a few scenes in common. Five, to be exact.

We won’t give away any spoilers, but you’re likely going to see Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt dangle in mid-air from some precariously high object. (Okay, we’ll spoil that one thing: It’s a plane.) At some point, he’s liable to run towards the camera as something explodes behind him. Ethan’s lightning-fast reflexes will be tested when a sharp, pointy object is thrust precariously close to his face. He’ll receive top-secret information via camera, computer, or fabulous pair of sunglasses, will spontaneously self-destruct after delivering their chunk of exposition. Finally, there’s always a plot point involving those hyper-realistic masks, which keep us guessing as to everyone’s true identity. (Is every character secretly Tom Cruise? Is Tom Cruise just a guy in a Tom Cruise mask?) It’s all part of the fun of the Mission: Impossible franchise. For more on the 5 awesome things you see in every M:I movie, watch the video above.
