007 Recaptures Retro Vibe as 'SPECTRE' Shoot Heads to Alps

James Bond is back on the slopes in style.

Production resumed Wednesday on SPECTRE, with Daniel Craig heading to the resort perched atop Gaislachkogl peak in Sölden, Austria, to film a key sequence for the 24th Bond caper.

The 007 star was flanked by French actress Léa Seydoux, who plays one of the film’s signature Bond girls, Madeleine Swann, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista as villainous heavy Mr. Hinx, as they posed for the press before beginning the shoot.

For today’s photocall, Craig wore a Canada Goose parka that won’t likely be appearing in the film, according to production notes; he also sported Persol 715 folding sunglasses — the same brand of specs favored by Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair and The Getaway.

Bautista modeled a military green Canada Goose constable parka, while Seydoux looked every bit the classic Bond babe in a black-and-grey-patterned winter jacket (no designer given) and Prada belt.

The trio will be spending the better part of a month in the Austrian alps, filming scenes on a cable car, at the resort’s Ice Q Restaurant, and around the mountain’s glacier.

Snowy climes have been a key ingredient in Bond films since the 1960s. The martini-swilling superspy has shown off his supreme slalom skills in such films as On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, A View to a Kill, and The World Is Not Enough.

For the latest sequel, filmmakers have made a conscious effort to hearken back to the iconic 007 canon. Beginning with the title, which references the shady terror group Bond has battled across the decades, to Bautista’s formidable henchman (who fits right in with all-time rogues likes Jaws, Oddjob and Messrs. Wint and Kidd), to the beauteous Bond girls (Seydoux will be joined by Italian stunner Monica Bellucci), to the return of Aston Martin as our hero’s luxury ride of choice.

Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, and Rory Kinnear are all back from Skyfall, while Christoph Waltz is on board, possibly as the head of SPECTRE.

Production commenced in December in London and, in addition to the Austrian snowfields, will also travel to Mexico City, Rome, and Morocco before wrapping in the spring. SPECTRE is set for a November release.
