Trendy New Built-in Home ‘Pet Suites’ Are the Ultimate Way to Pamper Your Pooch

Most people would be thrilled to find an apartment with a washer and dryer, a full-size refrigerator, a large flat-screen TV, plenty of storage space, and a specially designed spa tub.

But this unique living space is not designed for people. It’s designed for their dogs.

Yes, luxury pet suites have become a thing. Americans are expected to spend a whopping $60 billion on their pets this year, according to research done by American Pet Products, so it should come as no surprise that a portion of that will be spent on swank accommodations for Fido and Fifi.

Yahoo Makers took a couple of curious canines to visit a much touted luxury pet suite in a model home at a new housing development in Camarillo, Calif., called Hannover Village at the Park. We wanted to see what all the fuss was about and how the pups would respond to it.

We were impressed by the doggy amenities, including a dedicated, full-size washer and dryer for bedding, towels, and blankies; a full-size refrigerator for fresh food and filtered water; and a huge, wall-mounted TV for your pet’s viewing pleasure when you’re away.

We also loved the walk-in, tiled washing station with dog-level faucets and sprayers to keep the dog from getting hurt while jumping over the side of the tub, and to keep the owner from pulling a muscle while trying to heft Spot into and out of the bath.

And the ample storage space for toys, food, and other canine supplies was a thing of beauty.

April Aubrey, a real estate agent who specializes in pet and equestrian properties and has seven dogs of her own, says, “The new thing in real estate is this pet suite. This is the ‘man cave’ of the mid-2000 teens.” She added, “I would buy this house just for that.”

And the dogs’ verdict? Once we got them in, it was hard to get them out. Australian labradoodle Frankie Feldman and a whoodle (a wheaten terrier and poodle mix) named Teddy Austin plunked themselves down in front of the flat-screen TV and would have been content to sit there watching Animal Planet all day long while we served them delicious doggy snacks straight from the fridge.

Sorry guys — that’s not gonna happen. But we will extend your TV viewing privileges once we get home, now that we know how much you like Puppy Bowl reruns. The pet suite was just a special treat, but it is food for thought.
