A Total Upcycling Win: Dreamy, Mosslike Rugs Made From Carpet Scraps

Moss is having a real moment lately.

We’ve reported on a mossy rug project on Kickstarter, showed you how to DIY a beautiful moss wreath, and rounded up a bunch of other lush moss projects to tackle.

But this artist’s take on the trend will kick all your woodland fantasies into even higher gear.

Argentinian artist Alexandra Kehayoglou makes unique, mosslike rugs from leftover scraps and threads from her family’s Buenos Aires-based carpet factory. Her hand-tufted designs emulate meadows, trees, pools of water, even entire landscapes.

Creating art from carpet scraps seemed predetermined, the artist told Instagram

“I grew up surrounded by rugs,” she said. “I realized that the knowledge of rugs I had was in my genes. Using it as an artist became inevitable. The style that I’ve created is an abstraction of landscapes from my country. I would like everyone that looks at my pieces to feel that they are entering a new context. The pieces are big and feel infinite. They are meant to be portals that have the power of taking you where your memories are.”

Kehayoglou’s star is steadily rising — she made a “green” carpet for Dries Van Noten’s Spring/Summer 2015 runway show in Paris, has been featured in several galleries, and publishes new work regularly on her Instagram feed. She’s one to watch.

The takeaway lesson here, other than the amazing eye candy? The next time you’re faced with carpet scraps or old rugs, don’t just trash ’em. Do something Kehayoglou-esque with those pieces — and then tell us all about it, please!
