Tom Brady, Demi-God? Super Bowl Champs Become Classical Paintings

The New England Patriots’ last-minute victory over the Seattle Seahawks is already the stuff of legend. So it’s only fitting that MVP Tom Brady and star tight end Rob Gronkowski have been turned into classical paintings of Greek gods.

The QB’s face graces the portrait of Prometheus painted by Gustave Moreau in 1868. Gronkowski appears in “Abduction of Ganymede by Jupiter,” a work from 1644 by Eustache le Sueur.

The website Nobilified created the mashups, along with similar depictions of Russell Wilson, Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman, and Seattle receiver Jermaine Kearse. Nobilified will paint your face on any of dozens of masterworks for a fee starting at $99. You can customize your painting however you and your ego desire.

“Why be a god, when you can be an emperor riding a unicorn?” the site helpfully asks.

Nobilified CEO Chris Jensen explained the paintings to Extra Mustard last week, noting that in the Greek legend, the Titan Prometheus is punished by a bird (in this case representing the Seahawks) sent by Zeus. Unfortunately for Seattle fans, Jensen failed to note that Prometheus eventually escapes.

Gronkowski is portrayed as Ganymede, who was abducted by Zeus in the form of a hawk. Fans of the Patriots hunk may be curious to hear that Ganymede is described by the ancient Greek poet Homer as the most beautiful of mortals.

The Philadelphia Eagles linebackers already used Nobilified last summer to depict themselves as noblemen. If they win the championship next February, they can always have the paintings retouched to add their Super Bowl rings.
