Tiny Levitating Trees Are Most Magical Kickstarter Project Ever

Now this puts an entirely new spin on indoor gardening.

A Japanese company called Hoshinchu Air Bonsai Garden has created a way to make your indoor plants float in mid-air. It’s as if Harry Potter showed up IRL shouting “wingardium leviosa!” But this is actually real. Better yet, now that the Tokyo-based team has raised much more than their $80,000 Kickstarter goal to make these levitating beauties, you can own one yourself.

So how does an Air Bonsai float? The secret lies in hidden magnets powerful enough to suspend a plant. Each Air Bonsai is made of two separate pieces: the “little star,” a mossy ball that supports a plant, and the “energy base,” Air Bonsai’s Kickstarter page explains. Both sections include a built-in magnet to create the floating effect. The energy base also has a rotating mechanism to make the plant spin.

The ball floats about two centimeters above the base and has a sponge insert for planting (the bonsai trees themselves are not provided, due to export problems).

Getting your own mesmerizing floating greenery isn’t cheap, though. A basic set costs a minimum of $200 (plus shipping fees). The current estimated delivery date is April 2016.

Still, for the novelty — and sheer pleasure — of watching a plant spin in space, it’s priceless. Check out the Air Bonsai on Kickstarter.
