These Flower Arrangements Will Freeze You In Your Tracks

A beautiful bloom adds color and energy to a space, but its fleeting nature makes the experience short-lived. From vodka to aspirin, there are plenty of easy tips and tricks to make your flowers last longer. One avant-garde Japanese florist took the concept of extending a bouquet’s shelf life to the extreme. Azuma Makoto took gorgeous arrangements and froze them, suspended in huge blocks of ice. The ice blocks are 40 inches tall, two feet wide, and 15 inches deep. The florist explains that the ice cube is meant to function as a frame to the flower arrangements and that “it represents regulations of human-made objects.” The process of creating the ethereal ice block flowers was no easy feat. Makoto used a bandsaw to sculpt the ice blocks, carefully controlling which flowers to feature in the blocks. And the artist is not blind to the laws of science; he understands and embraces that the sculptures will eventually melt. The fact that the blocks slowly melt and expose the actual flowers almost act as a form of performance art.
