The Top Trending Cat Names of 2015: Elsa, Daenerys, Chewy and More

Since cats basically dominate the Internet — we’re looking at you, Grumpy Cat, I Can Has Cheezburger cats, and cat riding a Roomba — it’s not too surprising that pop culture has a big impact on what owners name their new feline pets.

Rover.com compiled a cat-name compendium earlier this year to go with their list of most popular dog names from 2015.

Lily took the No. 1 spot for female cats and Charlie topped the list for the boys. Shadow and Tiger, longtime Top 10 favorites, didn’t make the cut for the first time in three years.

Though typically only 10 percent of cats have human names — as opposed to 22 percent of dogs — Luna and Chloe were crossover hits. Both were on lists of 2015′s Top 10 baby names and cat names for girls.

Apparently, celebrities are less averse to this year’s popular cat names. Lily, Luna, Chloe, and Charlie were all featured in 2015′s crop of famous babies.

Bella — which has reigned supreme since the height of Twilight-mania in 2011 — finally got knocked down to fourth place … one spot for each year since the final installment of the mega movie franchise.

Which is not to say that cat names haven’t been hugely influenced by pop culture. Given the massive popularity of the Disney-animated film Frozen, Elsa was one of this year’s favorite picks. The Game of Thrones series enjoys a huge fan base, which likely had something to do with the inclusion of Daenerys as a popular choice among cat owners as well.
