This Bud’s for You: Sprout Hairpins Are Quirky Budding DIY Trend Overseas

Would you don a bean sprout in your ’do?

Forget the flower crown (been there, DIYed that!) — sprigs of plastic greenery pinned atop your head are the latest hot commodity in China. And this trend isn’t just embraced by the fashionista set; men and children have also been spotted sporting sprouts.

But where did this trend even come from, and more importantly, why does everyone suddenly want to have plastic plants growing out of their heads?

No one seems to know the answer, but the craze supposedly took off in Chengdu, the capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan province, sometime in early September. Street vendors sell the hair accessories for around a buck per bud, so joining in on plastic plant mania is about as accessible as it gets.

The trend is yet to germinate in the States, but we’re happy to do our part to plant the idea. (Honestly, the puns just come too easily with this one!)

So what do you think? Is this bud for you? If you’re into it, Amazon, eBay, and Etsy have you covered.
