Public Pool Parties for Dogs Are the Best Thing About End of Summer

Put away your swimsuit and cry yourself to sleep — pool season is almost over, and only one thing could make it better…

As we reach the middle of September, neighborhood pools around the country are preparing to send home dubious teen lifeguards and drain pools until they’re nothing but concrete, leaf-strewn memories of better, tanner times.

But first they’ll throw pool parties for dogs.

That’s right, select public pools around the country — nay, continent — are dedicating the last days of pool season to special dog-friendly pool parties where dog owners can bring their beloved pets to play, swim, and break the Internet’s heart.

Participating pools charge a small entry fee per dog, and proceeds are donated to local chapters of the humane society. A pool in Calgary raised $800 from 300 generous pooches at last year’s “Dog Paddle.”

Why doesn’t this happen every day, you may reasonably ask. “It’s hairy,” says Jennifer at the Mount Pleasant outdoor pool, “but we’re just going to get rid of the water anyway, so it’s a great way to wrap up our summer.”

And many aren’t deterred by floating in wet dog hair. “I like swimming with my dogs,” says Amira, a third-grader at a pool in Bristol, Tennessee. “My favorite part is when they jump in and splash me.“

Yes, Amira. We can imagine, and we are not jealous at all. Not one bit.
