Pass Grandma the Spray Paint: Street Artists Team with the Elderly to Revitalize Old Neighborhoods

Water cooler classes? Knitting? These senior citizens would rather work on the art of graffiti.

In Lisbon, Portugal a group of notable street artists are teaching 100 senior citizens the art of spray paint. The program, which is called Lata 65, is the result of a collaborative effort between Cowork Lisgboa and Wool – Covilhã Urban Art Festival.

Rather than allow the generational stereotypes continue to widen the divide between the old and the young, this initiative seeks to bring people of all ages together.

The elderly members of this street art workshop learn from Lisbon’s best and then get the opportunity to showcase their art around the city. The group specifically targets run down neighborhoods that they can bring beauty to through their art.

Even if most street art leaves you cold and you think Banksy should be arrested, you’ll find there’s something irresistible about grandmas and granddads blasting a wall with pop of color!
