No Halloween Mantel is Complete without a DIY Head in a Jar

image

Halloween is right around the corner and what better way to get ready for it than to pickle a head in a jar?! No, not a real head - a super cool, DIY’d “photo-head.”

All you need are three printed photos, some packing tape and a jar. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

Guests will be completely spooked when they see dear old Auntie Mable’s head perched above the fireplace - and so will Auntie Mable!

Materials:

  • 3 full-page printed pictures of someone’s face: 1 left profile, 1 right profile, and one front and center

  • Mason jar, roughly 12” tall

  • Scissors

  • Packaging tape

  • Water

  • Yellow, orange and green food coloring

  • Spoon/Stirrer

Instructions:

1. Take three photos of a person’s head (front and both profiles) and make color prints.

image

2. Cut the features (nose, mouth, eyes) off of the left and right profiles you’ve printed.

image

3. Lay them on the sides of your center shot so that the hair-line and chin line up.

image

4. Cover the whole composition with packaging tape, making sure that the edges overlap. Turn the paper over, and repeat.

5. Cut out the face under the chin, along the jaw, to the back of the head, over the top of the head, all the way around, creating a lumpy oval shape.

6. Use packaging tape to tape the edges of your cut-out.

7. Fill your mason jar with water.

8. Using your food coloring, add 2 drops of yellow, 2 drops of orange and 4 drops of green and stir with a spoon.

9. Curling the edges of your face, insert it into the water.

Now that’s a creepy head in a jar!
