Once a month, about a dozen New York City dads scramble in hopes to grab a spot at a class that always sells out. These men are eager to get into the Real Dads Can Braid lessons at Cozy’s Cuts for Kids.

The 45-minute class is led by owner Cozy Friedman, whose goal is to teach fathers a thing or two about basic hairstyling.

“Dads want to learn. I hear it all the time,” Friedman told the New York Times. But you can see right away on the playground whose hair was done by her dad. We’ve really had to start with the basics here.”

Kyle Smith, a father and columnist for the New York Post, had the opportunity to attend the event with his 7-year-old daughter, Summer. Smith, who said his daughter’s “hair arrangement duties fall to Mommy,” learned about the basics of hairstyling (and the importance of bobby pins), beginning with the acronym DAD.

“D is for Distract (turn on the TV). A is for Arrange, which means separating the hair into different sections,” writes Smith. “And the second D? ‘That D is actually for Detangling,’ says Friedman.”

For many fathers, learning to do hair is not optional — nor is it an undesirable task. Greg Wickherst, a single dad with a 3-year-old daughter, Izzy, grabbed attention online when he enlisted the help of cosmetology students and shared his results on Facebook.

“I took an interest in doing my daughter’s hair. It shows people that dads can do this kind of stuff, and I absolutely love it,” Wickherst told Good Morning America.

For those outside the New York City area, or those unable to catch a class in time, Cozy’s has a helpful blog post on how to simply style a small child’s hair.
