Make the Ultimate Fun Feather Headdresses and Menus for Your Thanksgiving Kids Table

Let the kids have a real pow-wow at the dinner table this Thanksgiving! Create a beautiful, feathered headdress in lots of fun and festive colors, and use it to display the menu of treats they’re about to devour. Then, let them join in the fun, by having an individual headband at each place setting.

Just because it’s the little people’s table, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a grown-up menu all their own!

Materials for Headdress Menu:

  • Black Card stock

  • Felt

  • 6 Turkey Quills

  • Chamois cloth

  • Embroidery thread

  • Feather Trim - preferably in 3 different colors palettes

  • Ribbons

  • Suede ribbon

  • 2 feather bouquets on a stick

Tools:

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue

Instructions:

1. Cut card stock and felt into a square that is slightly larger on one side, then glue it together.

2. Cut the first feather strip the width of the card stock on top, plus 1-inch. .

3. Felt side down, begin hot gluing the feather strips to the top (larger side) of the ‘square’, leaving a ½-inch overhang on both sides, and a slight upper arc in the middle.

4. Continue gluing the strips, overlapping slightly, and laying them down in a slight upward arc.

5. Glue the longest ribbon, about 3-feet-long, centered to the very bottom as the headband and tie-back for the headdress.

6. Glue the other ribbons in layers between the feathers and the headband, always leaving a ½-inch overhang on each side.

7. Wrap each quill of the turkey feathers in a small strip of chamois cloth, and fasten with a wrapping of embroidery thread.

8. Hot glue the turkey feathers across the front of the headdress on the first row of ribbon.

9. Lay another contrasting ribbon on top of the turkey quill ends and hot glue on each side of quill so that the ribbon is following the bump of the quill, and always leaving the excess overhang on each side.

10. Flip the headdress over, fold in and hot glue all the excess ribbons to the inside of the headdress.

11. Flip the headdress back to front and insert the feather bouquet, one on each side of the temples, under the ribbons. Secure with a drop of hidden hot glue.

Materials for Feather Headbands:

  • Chamois Cloth

  • Ribbons

Tools:

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue

Instructions:

1. Cut a strip of chamois cloth to go around a child’s head.

2. Lay a feather or feathers down in the center of the chamois strip.

3. Hot glue 6” of the stiffer, wider ribbon in the center, covering the feather quill.

4. Hot glue another contrasting ribbon in a 2’ length, through the center of wider ribbon, so that both show. Only glue the length of the wider ribbon, so that the ends can trail down.

5. Tie a headband with the chamois cloth ends, feathers in front of the forehead, letting the thinner ribbon hang down.
