Lightsaber Camp Teaches You How to Be Your Best Jedi Self

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a Jedi, the Lone Star Saber Academy may be your only hope.

The Texas-based organization was formed by dedicated Star Wars fans to help make the art of wielding light sabers a real practice. The volunteer group teaches those interested in the ways of the Jedi, using martial art techniques. They also visit schools, birthday parties and other local events

Participants can enjoy professional and amateur sword instruction and learn how to build their own lightsaber, as well as more community-building activities, like club meetings, fan films and cosplay and character development.

While most battle with homemade swords made of foam and PVC, some have taken their love for Star Wars to a level far, far away from this galaxy.

Marc Tucker, the co-founder of the Academy, has a perfect (and expensive) replica of Anakin Sywalker’s lightsaber made out with reinforced industrial aluminum.

Though the training consists mostly of whacking folks with pretend laser swords, the Academy is serious about serving the galaxy (or at least the local community). Tucker tells VICE that the Lone Star Saber Academy is focused on giving back. The fees go toward either materials for sabers or charity.

“We’ve given over $1,200 to Austin Disaster Relief Network,” Tucker told Vice, “and we’ve helped with the John Speasmaker Scholarship for Round Rock Drums and Rhythm workshops.”

If you’re not in Texas but want to be a Jedi, you’re in luck because the Academy is not actually your only hope. Star Wars culture is booming online and offline!
