4 Lemon Hacks with a Twist

Lemons aren’t just for recipes, you know! These little citrus fruits are a bit of a miracle and not only do they make a mean lemon meringue pie, lemons can be put to use all over your home! 

These bright, tangy, zesty fruits contain powerful oils in their peels as well as acids in their flesh that make them perfect for cleaning, preserving and refreshing. They seem to fix just about anything! (We like to think of them as the WD-40 of the fruit world).

Lemon “Mothballs”

Mothballs are great for keeping things smelling fresh and clean in your cupboards and drawers, but if you have small children around, mothballs can be a little hazardous. In this case, it’s better to go all natural, and you can do that with a homemade ‘lemon mothball.’ It won’t last you quite as long as the store bought ones, but it will definitely do the trick!

Materials:

  • Lemons

  • Cloves

Instructions:

1. Pierce the skin of the lemon with the cloves and place it in a closet, a drawer or wherever necessary.

2. Change often (it is perishable after all).

Lemony Hangover Remedy

If you’ve had a few too many glasses  of wine (or whatever you favorite poison is) then you could probably use a little bit of a hangover cure! In order to get your pH back in balance and you in tip top shape, add a little lemon to your hot water. You’ll be feeling better in no time!

Instructions:

1. Drink hot water with lemon to restore your natural pH balance after indulging in alcohol.

Brown Sugar Softener

You know how frustrating it is, when you reach for the brown sugar and it’s hard as a rock! Out comes the ice pick! Don’t break a sweat baking - just add a little lemon peel and your sugar will be as soft as it is sweet.

  • Lemon Peel

Instructions:

1. Put a lemon peel shaving in your brown sugar to keep it soft.

Rice That Won’t Stick

If you’re cooking up a batch of rice, you’re probably already thinking about the annoying clean up. Rice has a tendency to stick to the pot, making for more time spent at the kitchen sink after dinner. Skip the scrub and add some lemon peel to your cooking rice - the grains will cook beautifully and come away clean.

1. Pop some lemon peel in simmering rice to keep it from sticking to the pot for easy cleaning.
