Nothing beats this mini house to add whimsy and delight to a kid’s or guest bedroom. Tucked neatly into a room corner, plastic animals (or dolls) poke their heads out the windows of this unsuspecting little domicile. Part sculpture, part craft, and part animal dollhouse … all irresistible.

Materials:

  • Scissors (or X-Acto knife)

  • Two 4 x 36” Pieces of Balsawood (3/16th of an inch thick)

  • White spray paint

  • Plastic toy animals or bath toys

Instructions:

1. Cut six 10” long strips of wood.
2. Cut a 4 x 4” square of wood.
3. Make your door: Cut a 2 ½” x 2” square out of one side. You will only need to make 3 cuts for the door.
4. Make windows:  Cut smaller squares (1" x 1") out of two more pieces.  You will only need to make 3 cuts. For a skylight, cut a square on the roof (to poke a giraffe’s long neck through).
5. Create the base by gluing three 10” strips of wood together.
6. Glue the 4”x 4” side to close off one end of the house. This will help secure the foundation.
7. Take the remaining three 10” strips and create and angled roof by staggering them a few inches apart (like steps) and gluing them together.
8. Glue the roof on an angle to one side of the house. It will naturally angle down a bit.
9. Spray the whole thing white.
10. Find a clever spot for it and populate with animals!
