Inside an Amazing Home Made of Shipping Containers: This House Is the Ship!

Turning shipping containers into homes is a hot trend now, but Matt Mooney has been been thinking about building his unusual, amazing dream house since he was a kid.

"I've always loved shipping containers," Matt Mooney, a commercial architect with Corgan’s Dallas office, tells Yahoo Makers. He says ever since he was a kid reading science fiction authors H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, he wanted to live in a machine-like house. Two years ago, he and his wife, a retired nurse, decided to take the plunge. "I'd been thinking about it for a long time," he says. "And we finally got around to doing it."

So he began building his three bedroom, 3,700-square-foot dream house, which is made out of 14 shipping containers in all (the entire project is detailed on PV14house.com). "The biggest Lego blocks I could find," says Mooney.

Now, he's taking Yahoo Makers inside his new home to show off its features and relate the highs and lows of the construction project.

He also explains why — despite how much he loves his shipping container home — you probably shouldn't build one for yourself.
