Drip Coffee Doesn't Have to Suck With These 6 Buzz-Worthy Tips

If you can start your morning without a cup of coffee, we salute you! For most, however, it is a nearly impossible feat. The standard morning pick-me-up is a cup of drip coffee, which is certainly the easiest way to brew a big pot, but the results are often fairly non-eventful.

Achieving a more satisfying cup is absolutely within your reach, however! Here are six tips to get the most out of your drip coffee, without taking away from the beautiful simplicity of just pressing “on.”

Tip 1: Double Filter

Before you even add your coffee grinds, set up a double filter. The extra lining will create a smoother, more refined cup of coffee.

Tip 2: Add Chicory

If your drip coffee is a little lack-luster, you can add more depth of flavor with chicory. Readily available in the supermarket, chicory will add the richness to your coffee you may be missing, as well as soften any bitterness. It smells wonderful too, so it’s sure to fire up your senses in the morning, before that delicious cup even hits your lips.

Simply add a spoonful or two to your coffee grinds, pre-brew.

Tip 3: Add Black Pepper

Looking for a little zing in your coffee? Believe it or not, a couple of turns on the pepper mill, directly into your coffee grinds, will give your black coffee a note of spice and really wake up your brew.

Tip 4: Re-brew the Coffee

Once your coffee has finished brewing, pour the whole pot back through the filter and re-brew it. This second brew will refine your coffee and create a smoother finish.

Tip 5: Place Pennies Under the Pot

If for some reason you don’t finish your pot of coffee first thing in the morning, and it is left to sit on the hot burner plate for a while, it can have a tendency to scorch. Burnt coffee is never a good thing and, fortunately, it can easily be avoided. Place three pennies on the burner plate, and place the pot of coffee on top. The space between the burner and the pot created by the pennies will prevent any scorching.
