How to Make Eerie Halloween Candlesticks From Stuff You Already Have
If you want to add a little spooky atmosphere to your home this Halloween, why not bring the ghostly black Smokey Mountain range to your mantel? These 4x4 blocks are cheaply and readily available at the hardware store (many of us probably have a few scraps lying at home) and make for terribly terrific candlestick holders.
Better yet, now you know what to do with those left over blocks from your last DIY project!
Materials:
Wooden Blocks (4 X 4’s cut to 6” or 8” height)
Black Ritt Dye
Black Synthetic Cobweb
White Wood Stain
Varnish
Ivory Candles
Tools:
Electric Drill/ 3/4” - 1” Spade Drill Bit
Small Buckets for Dye, Varnish
2 Foam Brushes
Utility Knife
Paper Towel
Instructions:
1. Whittle down the hard edges of the wooden block to give it an organic shape.
2. Drill a candlestick hole in the center of the top of the wooden block.
3. Stain the block white and let it dry.
4. Pour the dye into a small bucket for dipping the wood.
5. Dip the wood into the dye, and use foam brush to wipe off excess. Wisp the brush upwards to create a ‘rocky mountain edge’, about an inch from the top.
6. Use a paper towel to rub and dab the dye, so that it makes a smoky effect. Proceed sparingly and let the dye dry.
7. Repeat a few times until the desired mountain range is achieved. Letting the dye dry in between each layer.

8. Apply a gloss varnish to the bottom half of the candle stick, if desired.
9. Pinch a bit of cobweb and pull it so it’s very thin and wispy, and place it over the hole for the candle - then insert the candle to keep the cobweb attached.
10. Twist a few bits of the cobweb to make it look like “smoke”, and pull and thin it out so it is swirling around the candlestick.
