Game of Thrones Costumer Reveals Amazing Details

The Game of Thrones series teems with intrigue, war, lies, hate, love and sex -- with twice as many characters to carry it all out. It makes sense in a show so complicated that the costumes play an important part in telling the story.

In an interview last year with Southern California Public Radio, principal costume embroiderer Michele Carragher shared the meaning of the many motifs found in the embellishments to costumes through Season Three.

Using dozens of different materials and techniques, Carragher creates a visual tale that provides clues about the characters’ history and allegiances. The Stark direwolf, Tully trout, and Lannister lion fight for dominance in bead and thread, as the families do in real life. Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons, not only cares for her “children” but is garbed in clothing that mimics their dragonscale skins.

These motifs were expanded upon in last year’s Season 4, with Margaery and Joffrey’s “Purple Wedding” finery, and the gowns worn by Daenerys as she grows into her role as queen of Mereen.

With the Season 5 premiere just one month away, feast your eyes on the details that often go unnoticed as the narrative drama unfolds on screen, and learn what to look for when we plunge back into the world of the Seven Kingdoms.
