PRESIDENTIAL PANCAKES

This recipe certainly takes the (pan)cake. Start your Presidents’ Day morning off with a side dish of George Washington. This clever mom crafted Washington’s face from pancakes! With a bit of Bisquick and some kitchen shears you can craft the face of any President of your liking. For bonus points, create eyes with grapes and powdered wig with whipped cream.

GUESS WHO?

Why not customize your favorite board game to become a presidential quiz game? You’ll have to bone up on all your presidential facts, but it’s a great way to learn more about your Presidents. Simply print three presidential photos, cut to size and insert in your Guess Who? Board. You’ll need one set for each board and then one set to draw from. “I’m the 27th President well-known for my ‘Dollar Diplomacy’ who got stuck in the White House bathtub.” Can you guess who?

WIG OUT

Even the history of the powdered wig seems to be as interesting as the history of the Presidents themselves! This fashion seems to have popularized as a result of bald heads caused by syphilis. The powdered wigs were also an easy way to combat lice as the wigs could be sent off and boiled quelling the problem quite quickly.

Why not bring back the powdered wig with this simple project? Glue cotton balls to a painter’s hat (you can use either a paper or thin cloth hat) with normal school glue. Bunch the cotton balls close together so they appear like the tight curls so often seen in the powdered wigs of yesteryear. Allow wig to dry overnight, and if you’re looking for a presidential polish, complete with a bow made of black ribbon or simple black yarn.

LOOKS LIKE LINCOLN

With his signature top hat and thick beard, Abraham Lincoln’s fashion is totally steampunk and hipster chic. You’ll look as honest as Abe when you craft this paper mask for your child. Cut the center out of an ordinary paper plate to act as your face. Then, cut a large top hat out of black construction paper. Attach to the top of your plate using masking tape or a glue stick. Lastly, attach a chunk of black felt tape to the bottom of the mask in a similar manner. Check out the full details of this project here.
