Food as Art in 'The Light Inside'

Playing with food may be discouraged at the dinner table, but in the hands of photographer Radu Zaciu, the result is a work of art. As Radu Ziciu explains in a profile on his work by Peta Pixel, the inspiration for this series, called “The Light Inside,” was derived from the etymology of the word light bulb. In German, the word for light bulb, ‘gluehbirne,’ translate to ‘glowing pear.’ His first piece was, fittingly, a pear with a glowing light inside.

The process of making these illuminated fruits and vegetables is a delicate balance. Using a drill or other tools, Zaciu has to carve out a hole to place the light bulb inside, but without taking too much of the flesh out. The final product gives the fruits and vegetables a kind of ethereal vibe.

The use of food as art can be found all over the spectrum. Artist Terry Border uses both food and other seemingly mundane objects to stage clever scenes. Whatever direction an artist decides to take food as art, they prove that for your next project idea, you have to look no farther than your own table.
