Empty Church Gets Modern Makeover, Becomes Gorgeous Minimalist Home

The home is often viewed as a spiritual place, but this design is next-level.

What was once an old, empty church in Chicago is now a gorgeous seven-bedroom home for a young family.

Linc Thelen Design teamed up with Scrafano Architects to create a house that is riddled with historic character yet has a modern vibe. Its new secular use carefully pairs rustic charm with clean minimalism.

From the outside, the church was preserved as close to its original form as possible. The owners even kept the church’s bell tower as a unique feature. The inside was completely gutted for a modern makeover with an open layout that makes more sense for residential use, but many features of the church were implemented into the design.

According to Inhabitat, the designers discovered the gorgeous, thick hardwood buttress when tearing down the original church’s ceilings. The result is a light-flooded great room with ceiling that soars 25 feet tall and gorgeous stained-glass windows from every standing point.
