YouTube DIY Star Aspyn Ovard on Craft Fails, Best Creative Advice, and More

Aspyn Ovard joined YouTube when she was 14 years old. Five years later, she keeps more than 2 million viewers entertained with DIY projects and lifestyle tips.
If that wasn’t enough to keep an ambitious 19-year-old busy, she also runs a second, more personal vlog with her new husband about their everyday lives as a YouTube power couple.
Yahoo Makers caught up with Ovard to get the scoop on what it’s like to be a video star and DIY guru before getting a driver’s license.
When did you first start DIY?
I have always been into making things! Especially DIY things like room decor.
If you had to pick one song to describe your crafting style, what would it be?
Hmm … maybe “Anything Goes” by Florida Georgia Line, because I always mess up but just keep going. Ha-ha! I usually mess up small details but think, “Who cares? It’s just a craft!”
If you could collaborate with one celebrity crush on a project, who would it be and what would you want to make?
I love Amy Poehler! She’s my fave. I would want to make a funny movie with her.

If you were a nail polish, what would your color be called?
A turquoise color called “The Only Color of Nail Polish Aspyn Ever Wears.”
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was really little, I wanted to be an actress! I always wanted to be on the Disney Channel. As I got older, I started getting into videography and photography, so I really love what I do now! I would love to expand what I’m doing, though, and continue with YouTube but also try and use the skills I have learned for other projects.
If it were up to you, what would YouTube look like 10 years from now?
I would hope it looks like a bully-free zone! Being a content creator is so much fun, but it sucks that people can be so mean. Maybe in 10 years, YouTube will be a happier place!
You roll out of bed and only have five minutes to get ready. What do you do?
This sounds like my everyday routine! I only usually wear makeup when I film, so I would brush my teeth and throw on some gym clothes so people thought I was going to the gym instead of just not getting ready. Then I throw my hair in a messy braid, and I’m good to go!

Describe your biggest DIY fail, or a time when a project went terribly wrong. Were you able to salvage it?
Today I actually made a painted pumpkin DIY for an upcoming video. I was painting stripes, and the paint leaked underneath the tape. It was so uneven and unclean! I went to grab another pumpkin, and the store was out of them, so I just had to go with it and own up to my messy project.
Tell us about a project you did that made you really proud. Why did this particular project stick out to you as a proud moment?
This wasn’t a DIY project, but I shot a Web show a few months ago and was really proud of myself for trying something new! I like to stay in my comfort zone, so acting was something totally different. But I had a great time and was proud of myself.
How do you overcome a creative block?
I just stop looking for new ideas for a little while and let my brain rest for a sec! Then, when I don’t feel as overwhelmed, I can usually think of a new idea!

What is the most useful creative advice anyone has ever given you?
Not necessarily creative advice but, Stay true to yourself. This is hard to do! But it’s very important.
What is one piece of creative advice you’d give to our readers?
Don’t feel too bad if you mess up! I do all the time, since I’m always rushing and really impatient. But DIYs are supposed to be fun, so take your time and don’t take it too serious!
