Craft Mittens to Help Save the Koalas!

To all you crafty DIYers out there, the Koalas of Australia need your help. There have been a slew of bushfires across South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria in the past week. These fires have left the Koala population severely injured, With burned paws, these not-so-mobile little creatures have a hard time clasping on to trees and climbing in their habitat.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare is asking for your help. What they desperately need, believe it or not, are mittens. To help these sweet animals get back on their feet, IFAW is asking people to donate or make simple ones.

“Many koalas perish in bushfires, while the lucky ones that survive are often badly injured and need intensive treatment by vets and dedicated wildlife carers,” IFAW said. “Injured koalas typically come into care with severe burns, especially on their paws, caused by contact with burning trees or from fleeing across fire grounds. These injuries need treatment with burns cream and paws need to be protected with special cotton mittens.”

Please donate your “craft fail” cotton mittens or use the pattern here to help treat and save the population. Every mitten counts, as dressings need to be changed daily.
