Ikea Announces Wedding Service: Requires Two to Assemble

Come to think of it, IKEA and marriage have a lot in common. They’re very popular. They both help you create a rich new home. And once you’re in one, it’s really, really hard to get escape without spending a lot of money.

Now, IKEA is taking its natural affinity to marriage a step further: it’s launched a fun new service that enables you to have a live online virtual wedding with seven of your closest friends in attendance (as long as those friends have working Internet connections and webcams).

IKEA’s Wedding Planner lets you pick from several virtual wedding venues: a beach, a city rooftop, a fairy tale-like forrest, or a sun-lit boat. You can invite your spouse-to-be, an officiant, two witnesses and four additional guests; each participant will appear in a video box that appears on screen on your virtual wedding setting. That way, everyone can enjoy the wedding from the comforts of their own homes without having to get dressed up or fly somewhere. On the downside, they miss out on the open bar.

You can do this wedding for fun or for real  — as long as the couple, the marriage officiant, and the legal number of witnesses are all in the same room.

IKEA does appear to have an ulterior motive for its Wedding Planner. Right there on the site are all kinds of decorative ideas you can have for traditional in-person weddings — with products available at you-know-where.
