Downtown L.A. may not be a galaxy far, far away, but it can resemble an alien planet from time to time. This was the backdrop for the brightest event since the Victory Celebration on Naboo, as super Star Wars fan Jenny Landa took on one of the toughest missions she’s faced yet; planning a wedding.

Jenny Landa is the host of a YouTube channel that addresses everything she loves. She is certainly a geek superfan, covering everything from Arrested Development fandom to how to DIY a zombie head in a jar. But her one, true love, is Star Wars. When it came time to plan her big day, the choice was easy.

If you aren’t into Star Wars, you may be struggling with the “why?,” But for Jenny, putting together a Star Wars wedding was a no-brainer. Jenny says, “From the moment we started planning, my now-husband and I decided that we wanted our wedding to be intimate, fun, and a reflection of who we are as a couple.”

For brides-to-be, this advice is invaluable. It is important to be able to look back on your wedding day and feel confident that this was truly a celebration that represented who and what you love.

But before Jenny and her chosen Han Solo, Joshua Busch, said “I love you,” and “I know,” there were a lot of details to attend to. It’s not easy to pull off a wedding themed after your fandom. Jenny had to create a way to share her love of all things Wookie while not overwhelming her guests. This delicate balance was achieved with careful consideration to inserting Star Wars touches into her big day. These inspiring photos from the event last September by Caca Santoro capture every nuance, but let’s find out more about the how Jenny pulled off the perfect Star Wars celebration.

Recently, Jenny answered some of the burning questions that aspiring brides have been asking, including advice on how to achieve a fan-based wedding without going overboard.

Some of Jenny’s favorite details involved in the wedding were those that cost the least. It doesn’t take a lot of money to put together those special touches. Jenny named her favorite detail of the wedding, “The Storm Trooper belt that I made, and wore to the reception, which actually ended up costing less than ten dollars to make.”

So where do you start as you put together your own themed wedding? Whether you are going for a Star Wars, Avengers, or Beauty and the Beast-themed wedding, the key is the details. Jenny says, “Have little surprises and little touches. I actually put tiny Micro Machines Ewoks inside every terrarium and some people saw them, and some people didn’t. But it was just a fun little detail that I enjoyed.”

It is easy to credit the beauty and success of Jenny’s wedding with the attention to detail. Adding subtle touches and key style notes to your ceremony proves to be a better approach than movie-perfect costumes and decorations. While your fandom is certainly a part of the wedding, so is your twist on the theme. Make it a 60/40 balance between your personality and the tone of the movie, adding on-the-nose references as minor details. Jenny’s wedding looked like a clean, upscale wedding of a couple from Cloud City, with small direct movie references instead of Jenny and Joshua sporting Han & Leia cosplay.

If you’re trying to determine how to relate your wedding theme to your mother-in-law, or even your great aunt twice removed, Jenny took the tact of just being honest; “The first thing my mother said was, you’re not going to have a bunch of Star Wars stuff, are you?” Jenny says that aside from these reservations, her mother ended up having a great time at the wedding. We are willing to bet that your guests, too, will have the time of their lives as long as you are.

Jenny Landa’s best advice fits for all brides, whether you are planning a traditional wedding or an all-out galactic extravaganza; “No one is going to remember what kind of flowers you had,” Jennifer says, “You and your guests are going to remember the feeling of the day, that’s what matters. Put that first and just have fun with it.”
