Banksy Evicts Protestor From His ‘Dismaland’ Theme Park

On Saturday, an artist exhibiting work at Banksy’s dystopian theme park, Dismaland, was evicted from the park after making some last-minute adjustments to his work.

“I found out when I arrived at the show that three Israeli artists were taking part, one of whom served in the IDF,” Shadi Alzaqzouq told the Jewish Chronicle. In protest, Alzaqzouq covered his paintings in bedsheets taken from his hotel room, used a lump of coal to scrawl “RIP Gaza: Boycott Israel” across the front, and then lay down like a corpse at the foot of his work.

Eventually security guards removed Alzaqzouq from the premises, claiming that this particular work of protest did not meet the anarchist-themed park’s standards — administrators reportedly deemed the additions “too ugly.”

Though the artist was removed from the park, his two paintings and their makeshift shrouds are still on display. Added is a placard explaining the dispute, and noting that the curators “apologize for any disappointment,” marking perhaps the first time Banksy has ever apologized for anything.
