Author Writes Entire Novel Post by Post on Instagram

Instagram is known more for its photos than its captions, but author/photographer Rachel Hulin is shaking that idea up — by releasing her new, 200-page novel one ‘gram at a time.

A similar project has been done before via Twitter in 2009, when author Matt Stewart tweeted his entire debut novel, The French Revolution. But Hulin isn’t limited to 140-character posts, and the dreamy, somewhat innocuous images she chooses to pair with her words create a sort of visual storybook for the tale — making it a richer experience.

Her book, Hey Harry Hey Matilda, follows a set of fraternal twins grappling with “love, life, lies, and growing up,” says Hulin on the book’s Web site….and it’s a sort of love story, too. “Harry and Matilda have a problem. They’re related,” the author teases. Their tale is told via a series of emails between Harry, a writer and an untenured English professor at the University of Connecticut, and Matilda, an artist and wedding photographer in Brooklyn, all inserted into Instagram’s caption field.

The story will roll out on  @heyharryheymatilda over the next 9 or so months, a period that roughly follows the timeline of the novel. The author just started posting a few weeks back, so you can easily catch up.

We’ve shared the first 10 “pages” here; follow along on Huilen’s Instagram for the rest. (Or, if you’d rather just read it in the traditional way, the author has posted part one online.)
