Artist Skips Dental School to Carve Crayons into ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Star Wars’ Sculptures

Forget the adult coloring book hobby. Hoang Tran has made a whole career out of his love for crayons.

The 30-year-old artist, known on Instagram as @mumblestohimself, uses Crayolas as his canvases, carving intricate, mini versions of beloved pop culture figures. Tran has paid tribute to everything from Game of Thrones to Calvin and Hobbes, but he didn’t grow up knowing he’d pursue such a unique path.

Before he carved crayons, Tran spent three years in dental school. Though he realized dentistry wasn’t for him, it wasn’t necessarily a waste of time.

“I withdrew to pursue something more creative,” he told Instagram. “I had seen someone else’s crayon carvings years before, and they stuck in my mind. Because we’d done something similar in dental school — we carved teeth from wax — I knew I had the skills to try [it].”

Now, Tran sells his sculptures on Etsy, where they go for $30 to $60 apiece. (Which is great news for those of you looking for unusual holiday gifts!) His work has also been commissioned and exhibited in art galleries.
